Ment Formation

Ment Fm

Period:
Devonian

Age Interval:
Lower Frasnian, N3

Province:
Nuratau

Type Locality and Naming

Along the village of Ment, Khanbandytay mountains, northern foothills of the N. Nuratau range. O.I. Sergun'kov in 1959 (441, p.300). Stratotype in the Khanbandytay mountains, near the village of Ment.

Synonym: Ment Suite, Ментская св., Mentian Fm

Lithology and Thickness

Massive and thin-bedded organogenic-clastic limestones. Thickness 700-800m.

Lithology Pattern:
Reef limestone

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

Contacts with the underlying Pistalitau Fm. However, P.N. Podkopaev et al. (1961) believe that the Ment Fm lies transgressively, with erosion on the Pistalitau Fm and record intraformational erosion.

Upper contact

Overlying Ust-Kuruksay Fm are normal-stratigraphic.

Regional extent

Northern foothills of the North Nuratau range, Khanbandytay mountains. V.P. Vashchenko et al. (1980) consider the Ment Fm as a system of organogenic structures; Z.S. Rumyantseva et al. (1982) consider the formations of the Ment Fm as a reef, and the overlying Ust-Kuruksay Fm as contemporaneous with its inter-reef formations.

Fossils

The early Frasnian age of the suite is established by brachiopods - Pugnax pugnus Mart., P. acuminata mesogonia Phill., Productella ex gr. subaculeata Murch., Lerphuroceras domanicense Holz., G. uchense Kays., Tornoceras simplex Buch., Hypothyridina cuboides Sow., Elytha undifera Roem., Adolfia zickzack Roem. (Bukharin et al., 1990), conodonts - Ancyrodella binodosa Uyeno., A. rotundiloba (Bryant.), Polygnathus asymmetricus Bisch. et Ziegl. and others, stromatoporoids - Stachyodes cf. costulata Less.; tabulates - Cladopora cf. vermicularis Mc' Coy (165).

Age

Yu.N. Apekhtin et al. (1983) divided the suite into three parts, the lower one is distinguished as the "Dzhizak suite", and the other two are assigned to the Givetian (middle) stage and early Frasnian (upper) substage. In the monograph (165) - middle-late Devonian, Thickness 350m; on the State Geol. Map-500 of Uzbekistan (460) and R.R. Usmanov et al. (1999) early Frasnian age.
